VanHoose Switches From Hoosier To Wildcat

Northwestern had a big day on Saturday. It was just the first day of bowl preparations, but Coach Pat Fitzgerald and the Northwestern football program hosted six recruits, including a pair of recent Indiana decommits.

One of those was Nick VanHoose (Graham H.S., St. Paris, OH), who on Monday night, pulled the trigger to become a Wildcat.

VanHoose is a three-star, who was a standout at both running back and safety. Nick was a strong verbal commit to Indiana, but when the Hoosiers fired head coach Bill Lynch, VanHoose dropped his commitment, and decided to explore other options.

"Until Indiana made the decision to let Coach Lynch go, his verbal was strong to Indiana," said Nic Black, head coach of Graham High School.

When Indiana fired Lynch, VanHoose and his family asked Coach Black to help Nick explore his options. When VanHoose decommited from IU, multiple teams, including Northwestern, jumped at Nick.

"We did have some interest from several big ten schools," said Coach Black. "Northwestern was very interested, and was quick when they heard he was re-evaluating things."

VanHoose visited Northwestern's Saturday practice, while staying in touch with Coach Black.

"He sent me a text last night, and sent me a few texts from campus on his visit, that he was just really excited about his visit, bowl practice, and some of the kids that he had met," said Coach Black of Nick's visit. "He seemed to be comfortable by what he was sending me."

Nick told Coach Black that he was very excited about the up-tempo practice that the Wildcats ran, which is similar to the practice style of Graham High School.

Looking ahead, Coach Black feels Nick will be a great fit for the Northwestern football program, a program in which he feel is on their way to big things.

"He fits their type of kid pretty well," Coach Black said. "He's going to be a very good fit for their program in general."
