Seeking their first NCAA tournament bid in program history, the Northwestern fan base is very excited about this year’s ‘Cats. The Wildcats enter Big Ten play with a 9-1 record, and feature the conference’s leading scorer, John Shurna. The program is reaching new heights, and Wildcat fans have a lot to be excited about. Amongst the team’s biggest fans is future Wildcat Dave Sobolewski.

Sobolewski (Benet Academy) is a native of Lisle, IL, which is a short 45 minutes away from Evanston. Sobolewski has been to three games so far, and plans on going to the Michigan State and Indiana games in the coming weeks.

With the ‘Cats enjoying early success, Sobolewski thinks this season will be a great one for the program.

“I do really think they have a great chance to make the tournament,” said Sobolewski. “They were really good last year, and everyone is a year older. They’re hungry, and everything comes down to how they play in the Big Ten.”

Meanwhile, as the Wildcats enjoy their success, Sobolewski is having his own success in his senior season. His Benet Academy team is 10-0, as they enter the Proviso West Holiday Tournament on Monday. Benet is led by Sobolewski as point guard, and center Frank Kaminsky, a 6’11 senior, who has committed to Wisconsin.

Benet’s great duo has led them to early success in their season.

“It’s going really well, it can’t go much better than it has,” said Sobolewski of his team’s season. “We’ve played some good teams, and we’ve beaten them pretty handily. I’m ready for the next step, which is the Proviso tournament.”

In his junior season, Sobolewski was named 2nd team All-State, All-Area, and was the Player of the Year in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. Sobolewski is putting together another great season, and is well on pace for more postseason accolades.

While focusing on his senior season, Sobolewski is looking forward to becoming a Wildcat. He has followed the team, and has stayed in touch with players and coaches. Sobolewski said he stays in touch the most with assistant coach Tavaras Hardy, who recruited him to Northwestern.

With Northwestern having early success, and Sobolewski enjoying his own success at the high school level, the future appears bright for both. Sobolewski is enrolled for summer school classes, and is very excited to begin.

“I honestly can’t wait to get on campus in June for summer school,” said Sobolewski. “This is one of the best teams they’ve ever had. There’s a little bit of a buzz around campus. It will be a blast to get going. There will be a lot of older, experienced guys returning next season.”
