Thus far, Schutt (6’3, 290-lb) has an offer from Northwestern along with, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, USC, and others.
As his recruitment progresses, Schutt is receiving phone calls from area codes all across the country. The heavy national interest has the four-star lineman feeling pleasantly surprised.
“It’s really cool,” said Schutt. “I never thought it would happen like this and happen so fast.”
With a long list of options, Schutt is planning out his visit schedule. He is set to visit Ohio State on Sunday, and is in the process of setting up visits with Notre Dame, Penn State, and Wisconsin. In addition, he left a message with Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald, in hopes of visiting Northwestern in the next couple weeks.
In his visits, Schutt is hoping to find the place that fits him best.
“I’m just going to try to get out to some schools, find a place where I’m comfortable, and meet the coaching staff.”
Visiting each school will be no easy task for Schutt. His offers are from schools in 11 different states and four different time zones. With that traveling challenge, Schutt is hoping to set up a few road trips. He will do an unofficial visit to interested Florida over his spring break trip to the sunshine state, and will do a long tour of the southeast and west coast during the summer.
But with a list of interested schools within a short drive of Schutt, the lineman said those visits will be his first priority. One of those schools is Northwestern, the school within the closest proximity to his hometown of Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
Throughout his recruitment, Schutt has built a great relationship with NU head coach Pat Fitzgerald, and is very impressed with what Northwestern has to offer.
“It’s definitely a program that I think is on the up-rise for sure,” said Schutt. “I like Coach Fitzgerald a lot. The academics are top-notch. I’m definitely looking at them and would like to get on campus really soon.”
And even as the other offers and interest comes in, Schutt is constantly in touch with Fitzgerald.
“We talk every couple weeks,” Schutt said. “We message back and forth. He’s a great guy, great coach; I get along with him really well.”
While Schutt sorts through his extensive list of options, he has laid out the top factors in picking a school. So what’s most important to him?
Really just how comfortable I am in the school with the coaching staff and the players,” Schutt said. “Also, academics and playing time are an important factor in as well.”
So as Tommy Schutt’s calendar continues to fill up, the highly-touted lineman expects to be busy nearly each upcoming weekend with a visit. Schutt says it is still very early in his recruitment, and a decision is still a while away.
“I’ll narrow it down in a couple months and make some decisions.”
