Fitzpatrick Is A Wildcat

Northwestern’s search for a long snapper has ended. After evaluating a group of the nation’s top long snappers, Northwestern offered Lawrenceburg (KY) long snapper Chris Fitzpatrick on Saturday morning, and he committed on the spot.

“I had an email from Coach Hankwitz last night telling me to call him today,” said Chris Fitzpatrick. “They offered and I committed.”

Fitzpatrick (6-2, 230) was at Northwestern’s one-day camp on Thursday with a number of the nation’s elite long snappers. The Northwestern coaches got the chance to watch him in-person and were left feeling very impressed.

Going into Northwestern’s camp, Fitzpatrick knew a scholarship would be available to a long snapper. With no offers on the table yet, Fitzpatrick wanted to earn one from his top school. He spent the week working hard on his snaps with that offer in the back of his mind.

“I was excited and wanted to snap my best and I guess I did,” Fitzpatrick said. “I worked hard that whole week.”

NU head coach Pat Fitzgerald called Fitzpatrick’s long snapping coach Chris Rubio on Friday. Rubio was expecting to hear about all of his long snappers who were in attendance. Fitzgerald just talked about one. That was Chris Fitzpatrick.

“(Fitzgerald) didn’t really say much, he just said he was the best one there,” Rubio said. “I wouldn’t doubt it.”

The hard work that Fitzpatrick put in for an offer comes as no surprise to Rubio, a long snapping guru, who has worked with the standout snapper for years.

“He’s improving every single day,” said Rubio. “He’s not resting and continues to work hard. He has great speed and a very good attitude.”

Fitzpatrick is ranked seventh on the Chris Rubio rankings of the top 2012 long snappers, but Rubio added Fitzpatrick is always improving.

“He’s really matured with his body in growing thick and advancing muscular-wise,” said Rubio. “He’s a very hard worker. He’s worked on his form and is really humming (his long snaps) down. He’s just a great, great kid.”

Fitzpatrick’s trip to Evanston this week was his second recruiting visit to Northwestern. He first visited campus in April for the NU spring scrimmage and had a great experience. At the time of that visit, Northwestern had a scholarship out to Scott Daly, but Daly committed to Notre Dame on the same day.

The NU coaches told Fitzpatrick and a number of other long snappers to workout at a Northwestern camp and possibly earn a scholarship there. Fitzpatrick proved he was the best and had his hard work rewarded.

“He’s a great kid because he’s always smiling,” Rubio said. “He’s learning, enjoying, and every single week, he sends me a short video clip of his long snapping. He recently had his dad film one from the side of the road. He shows me he wants to get better and obviously it pays off.”

Fitzpatrick took first place for long snappers in the Illinois Nike fall camp. He is also a center and defensive end on his Anderson County (KY) High School team. For more information on Chris Fitzpatrick, check out his profile for Rubio Long Snapping by clicking HERE
