The Portage Northern (MI) High School product has yet to choose a favorite out of his top five and won't discuss scholarship offers, saying that is "between me, my dad, and the college coaches." However, he likes different things about each school and hopes to take all of his official visits, even after seeing each of his top five once already.
"They've all brought something different," he said. "Nebraska is a place you go and feel the tradition the whole time you're there. Then you go to a place like Syracuse or Pittsburgh and they're all kind of different locations. They all bring something different to the table."
Bitterle spoke highly of Northwestern as well.
"I love Coach Fitzgerald," he said. "He's a really passionate guy and it shows in his coaching. Just everything about their campus and town, it's kind of older but in a nice location. The stadium is awesome, all the facilities are nice, and it's kind of just a nice place to be."
Ultimately, Bitterle plans to choose "the school that I'd fit in the best," but his three main criteria will be academics, the coaching staff, and early playing time.
He feels like he has a fair chance to play early at every school and has spoken about it with the Northwestern coaches.
"I talked to the coaching staff about it and they're kind of like whoever comes in, comes in and they get to compete for the job," he said.
Bitterle still plans to take all of his official visits before he makes a decision.
"I'd like to make (the decision) after my third game, but we'll just see how it goes, really," he said.
As his senior season draws closer, quarterback Troy Bitterle has narrowed down his college search to Illinois, Nebraska, Northwestern, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse.
