The Big Ten conference announced on Monday that Northwestern senior forward John Shurna was named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week, while freshman point guard David Sobolewski earned Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week honors.
Shurna scored 28 points in Thursday’s win over Nebraska. He connected on 9-of-13 shots, then scored 24 points in Sunday’s game with Illinois, including 17 in the second half, which was key to Northwestern’s first win in Champaign since 1999.
Sobolewski scored 15 points, added six rebounds and five assists against Nebraska. During Sunday’s game against Illinois, he posted 14 points and did not surrender a turnover in the entire game. This is his first career Big Ten weekly honor.
Ohio State center Jared Sullinger also earned Big Ten Co-Player of the Week honors along with Shurna. He scored 24 points and had 10 rebounds in a win over Wisconsin. Iowa forward Aaron White split the Co-Freshman of the Week honor with Sobolewski.
Northwestern plays twice this week, the first on Thursday against Iowa. The Wildcats then travel to play Purdue on Sunday afternoon.
