Onwualu Big On Academics

Northwestern has extended a scholarship offer to Cretin-Derham wide receiver James Onwualu. Read the junior's thoughts on what he likes about Northwestern in this PurpleWildcats.com recruiting update.

James Onwualu has become a big name on the football field, leading to eight early scholarship offers. However, the 6-foot-2, 205-pound receiver also happens to be big in the classroom.

Onwualu carries a 4.2 grade point average at Cretin-Derham (MN) High School. His most recent offer, coming from Northwestern, has him thrilled.

"Obviously its a great university," Onwualu said of Northwestern. "I am very excited about it."

Onwualu currently carries offers from Northwestern, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Purdue, and Stanford. He has received interest from a number of other schools

Northwestern jumped into the mix last week, just days after National Signing Day. The first thing which came to Onwualu's mind about NU were its academic reputation.

"I know that (Northwestern's) academics are at the level that I am looking for," said Onwualu. "Also, the alumni and people in the community are great."

The standout wide receiver is hoping to visit Evanston to check out Northwestern, and hopes to meet for the first time with NU head coach Pat Fitzgerald.

Onwualu has yet to narrow down his list or name any favorites, but he knows what he wants in the right school.

"Academics are definitely the biggest thing for me," he said. "Also, the community that surrounds the program."

As a junior, Onwualu had 25 catches for 356 yards and four touchdowns. His main duty on offense came as a running back, where he averaged 7.9 yards per carry and recorded seven touchdowns.
