Smith To Transfer From Northwestern

Northwestern announced on Wednesday that sophomore running back Adonis Smith has announced his intentions to transfer from the program.

Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald announced that sophomore running back Adonis Smith will transfer from the football program.

"We're disappointed to see Adonis leave Northwestern," said Fitzgerald. "He is an outstanding young man and we wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors."

Smith, a native of Oakland, Calif., and a product of Junipero Serra High School, was Northwestern's fourth-leading rusher in 2011. He posted 266 yards and four touchdowns, though he played in just eight games. As a true freshman, Smith averaged 4.8 yards per carry in nine games, including one start.

Following the 2010 regular season, then-sophomore running back Arby Fields also transferred from Northwestern, opting to play baseball for LSU.
