Hollins Named a Bob Cousy Award Finalist

Minnesota sophomore guard Andre Hollins has been named a Bob Cousy Award finalist, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced today. The award, named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, is given annually to the nation's top men's basketball point guard.

Hollins is one of 20 players across the country to be named a finalist. The list will be narrowed down to 10 in early February and then to five in early March before a final vote in late March for presentation at the Final Four in Atlanta. The original list consisted of 80 players and was announced in December.

A native of Memphis, Tenn., Hollins is leading the Gophers in scoring and assists with averages of 13.7 ppg and 3.7 apg and is third on the team in minutes played at 27.2 mpg. He is coming off of 22-point, a career-high eight rebound and six assist night in Minnesota's win over No. 12 Illinois in Champaign on Jan. 9.

Earlier this season Hollins was named the Big Ten Player of the Week (Nov. 26) following the Gophers' 2-1 showing in the Battle 4 Atlantis. After a defeat to then No. 4 Duke, Hollins paced Minnesota with a career-high 41 points in the win over then No. 19 Memphis, becoming just the fourth player in Gopher history to surpass the 40-point plateau and the first since Oliver Shannon scored 42 against Wisconsin during the 1971 conference season. To date, his 41-point outburst is the second-most this season in Division I.

The Gophers are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 12 in Bloomington, Ind. against the fifth-ranked Indiana Hoosiers. The game is scheduled to tip at 11:00 a.m. CT.

Minnesota will be back at Williams Arena on Thursday, Jan. 17 to face the second-ranked Michigan Wolverines at 6:00 p.m. CT.
