Nate Taphorn enjoys visit with Chris Collins

Nate Taphorn met with Chris Collins for the first time, and came away impressed. Find out his reaction in this Purple Wildcats Insider update.

Everyone asks Nate Taphorn – the sole Northwestern commit for 2013 – when he officially begins his time on campus.

He has the date memorized: June 23rd. And after Taphorn met with Chris Collins for the first time, his excitement continues to increase.

"He's a very good guy," Taphorn said. "I think that he's going to bring a lot of electricity to the program."

The three-star prospect from Pekin HS (Ill.) appreciated the recent publicity efforts from Collins.

Despite dealing with the busy recruiting schedule, Collins made an appearance at the United Center last night. Taphorn said this – as well as his upcoming trip to Wrigley Field – are effective ways to "bring attention" to NU basketball.

It also helps that Collins retained Tavaras Hardy, his original lead recruiter.

"I was ecstatic when [Hardy] told me he was going to stay," Taphorn said. "I've been so comfortable with him. It's a great feeling that he's going to be there for the long run."

For about two hours, though, Taphorn and Collins discussed just about everything. They talked school, basketball and training. Though Collins was not around for his initial recruitment, he encouraged Taphorn to be confident.

"He told me I need to be myself when I play," he said. "He really wants me to work hard, and work my way into the starting lineup just like everyone else."

Taphorn noticed that Collins has succeeded at every stop, and was impressed by his professional experience. Though he was dismayed after the dismissal of Bill Carmody, he looks forward to the future of NU basketball.

He hasn't spoken with Jaren Sina in quite some time – an interesting departure from the days when they would communicate several times per week. Taphorn said that it makes sense because Sina has been "busy" with his recruitment.

The two-hour visit only convinced Taphorn that he made the correct decision to remain bound to his letter of intent.

And he's counting the days until June 23rd.
