With the Northwestern assistant coaching staff cemented, there was only one piece remaining: Director of Basketball Operations. For this position, Chris Collins finally added his Duke touch.
PurpleWildcats.com has learned that Chris Lauten–another inspired choice–will be named DBO. He joins Tavaras Hardy, Brian James (also not yet official) and Patrick Baldwin as the primary four elements of Collins’ new-look group.
Lauten currently serves as Coordinator of Basketball Operations for the NBA Development League. Though he seldom received media attention during that period, this Duke Chronicle article provides some insight into his past experiences. He worked as the Duke basketball team manager from 2003-08, when Collins was (of course) an assistant.
It makes sense: Lauten seemed to excel in his role and valued connections. He helped former Duke player Christian Laettner earn a D-league coaching position and worked with others following his team managerial career.
No staff member qualifies as a “splashy” hire. However, there’s reason to be excited for the future in Evanston. They bring diverse experience to the table, and after all of the speculation surrounding Jon Scheyer and Greg Paulus, a quieter candidate is the Duke man.
