Vic Law committed to Northwestern on July 4th. It's a huge day for the program.

The first signing by Chris Collins is the greatest signing in Northwestern basketball history.

As first reported by Cavan Walsh of ChicagoHoops.com, four-star small forward and Scout.com Top 100 player Vic Law gave his verbal to NU on Thursday, and the program momentum only continues.

Collins and his assistant coaches watched their strong work pay off immediately; it’s still almost impossible to fathom.

“It just felt like the right time,” Law said shortly after his decision. “Fourth of July, what could be better?”

Law was at the top of NU’s recruiting board ever since Collins took over. The new head coach re-extended the Carmody era offer after visiting Law in April, and pitched the vision: Here, Law could establish tradition.

“I believe in Chris Collins,” he said. “I’m his first recruit and I really believe in him. I’m ready to go in there and turn it around.”

With an emphasis on up-tempo style, academic excellence and his coaching pedigree, Collins closed by the beginning of July. This also marked the combination of several strong decisions, as Armon Gates led his recruitment in its final stages.

Law said it was incredibly meaningful to be this first commit under Collins. This is one step, and Law wants to be the catalyst in attracting other top recruits. That list includes but is not limited to Tyler Ulis, who he identified as his current top target. (Both played together on the AAU circuit.)

“I won’t be the only top player going to Northwestern,” Law said. “I can tell you that. I’ll pull some other guys.”

Yesterday, Law sat down with his high school coach at local St. Rita’s (Ill.) and discussed making his commitment. Walsh initially reported that Dayton and VCU were the other frontrunners; NU just seemed like the unique fit.

“Northwestern came through in the end,” he said. “I love Chris Collins, his staff and the school.”

Law, most importantly, discussed his excitement for the future. What more do you need to know? NU has never made the tournament, the current roster is somewhat depleted and Collins needed his first piece to fall in. Everything will improve from here, you could presume.

Law can celebrate. Fans will join him. Collins was expected to help this team improve its recruiting efforts. But this quickly? It’s remarkable.

“When you’re at the bottom, you can only go up,” Law said. “I know we can win. When we make the tournament for the first time, there will be a lot of noise in Chicago.

“I think we’ll be at the top for years to come.”
