2014 DE Washington gives mid-visit update

2014 DE Xavier Washington, on visit to Northwestern, spoke with PurpleWildcats.com about his status.

It's less than a week until national Signing Day. Xavier Washington still isn't sweating it.

"I've never been up north before. It's a completely different feel up here," Washington, a 2014 prospect from Cedar Hill (Tex.), told PurpleWildcats.com about his trip to Northwestern's campus. "I like it. I've been walking around like a little kid playing with snow."

Washington received a last-minute gray shirt offer from the Wildcats Tuesday, and flew up to see Evanston by Friday. With the deadline for a decision coming soon, Washington says he was impressed by what he saw.

Perhaps the only thing impeding a commitment to the Cats now is a meeting with coaches from Southern Methodist in Dallas this weekend. SMU has yet to extend an offer, though Washington has attended camps there for the past two summers. He also holds offers from Houston, North Texas, Yale and four other schools.

Washington was accompanied by D-linemen Deonte Gibson and C.J. Robbins, and running back Xavier Menifield Friday.

"We have the same goals. Overall, I feel like I fit in," he says. "I haven't made my decision yet, but I like what I'm seeing up here."

Washington would be a natural replacement for Noah Westerfield, another two-star defensive end from Texas. At 6-1 and 235 lbs., Washington's frame doesn't stand out much, but his impressive senior season — which concluded with nine tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble and Defensive MVP honors in Texas' Class 5A Division II title game — has his stock rising quickly as programs scramble for final commits.

He and 2014 safety Jared McGee are the last two recruits Northwestern is waiting on before Wednesday's Signing Day. Adding Washington would give NU's front line some much-needed depth.

"I fly under the radar, but I think I'm able to compete on the same level as the guys from my state with huge offers," he says. "Northwestern would be a great fit for someone like that."
