2015 DE Trent Goens commits to Northwestern

2015 defensive end Trent Goens of Chino Hills (Calif.) talks about his Northwestern commitment.

For Trent Goens, the process began with family.

You can joke about recruiting clichés. And sure, many schools pride themselves on community.

But here, it's real.

Goens arrived on campus two weekends ago and was surrounded by the perfect atmosphere. The three-star defensive end from Chino Hills (Calif.) held offers including Washington, Boise State, Miami (Fla.) and California. Only one school felt like home.

He called Pat Fitzgerald on Monday night and committed to Northwestern—the sixth pledge in four days for NU. Even scarier, there are more commits on the way, and soon.

"It's really great," Goens told PurpleWildcats.com. "It's indescribable. I had been thinking about making a decision for a while now. It's the biggest decision of my life.

"It's definitely something that took up a lot of time and thinking and researching. I have 100 percent confidence in my decision. I'm ecstatic."

NU did the little things, perfectly. They asked about his brother, who attends school in Minnesota. They appealed to his mom, a principal who values academics. The attention, the community and the academics played major roles in the choice.

"It was the perfect fit to be honest," Goens said. "The connections and the degree itself are prestigious. There are only a handful of degrees in the country that are equivalent to it."

He arrived at NU campus split between the Wildcats and Washington. Jerry Brown and Marty Long had built positive relationships with the huge priority. Even players like Brett Walsh spoke to him about the culture change from California. Everything expanded Goens' interest.

"Since the visit, Northwestern has been way up there," he said. "They were my No. 1. The biggest part for me—aside from the academics—are the players. I felt like I meshed with the players. They have the same interests as I do. They want to get a great degree. They all want to be a great team."

With Goens adding defensive end depth, they certainly will be. On an emotional night, he just continued the ‘Cats momentum.
