Fitz: Daniel Jones Will Not Play In 2014

The rising junior CB won't make it back from the knee injury he sustained in Cal last summer.

Wildcat cornerback Daniel Jones will not suit up for the team this year, according to Pat Fitzgerald, who announced the news Tuesday at Big Ten Media Days. He will retire from football.

Jones, a rising junior, was expected to compete for the No. 2 cornerback role opposite Nick VanHoose. He received a medical redshirt last year after undergoing season-ending knee surgery. Jones tore his ACL last August while defending a pass in the second quarter of Northwestern's game against Cal.

Though he didn't practice in spring, Jones was expected to contribute this season. Now, an additional injury sustained this spring has forced his career to an early end, according to Fitzgerald.

It's a bad loss for NU, but one that it can shoulder. Rising sophomore Matthew Harris was strong in his relief of Jones, and Dwight White will provide solid competition for the nickel position. Redshirt freshman Keith Watkins, one of the team's most improved players this offseason, bolsters cornerback depth as well.
