We understand that true freshman Trevor Rees has been seen playing with the first team starters at Center. Junior Matt Ulrich has apparently has moved to left guard, with fellow redshirt junior Bill Newton over on the Right.da Coach
I wouldn't expect this to be the starting front 5 on August 30th, [remember Coach Randy Walker's words last spring] but it does show that Rees has a legit shot at playing in the middle, and that shot could come very early.
Not mentioned lately is the other Frosh Center, Austin Matthews. We've heard rumors that he's hurt [foot?], but we all know that NU doesn't comment on injuries during camps. There are also reports of several other players up front nursing injuries that could keep them out of the early games. Comment - The number of injuries suggests a lot of intesity in practice - and that the BWildcat defense is really working these guys hard.
However, every report I have seen so far suggests that the Zach Strief - Trai Essex tandem at Tackle could be All-Big 10 if they can play against the competition the way they're playing against our defense right now. They appear to have mastered the fine art of "holding/not holding," something you have to do to play Tackle at this level.
It is interesting that there are few reports about how Brett Basanez and Alex Webb are doing. All we've had is the early interview with Brett. NU Sports is reporting about receivers - Junior Ashton Aikens is highlighted this morning. [Camp Kenosha: Day 6]
You do have to wonder if OC Mike Dunbar has enough Wide Receivers now - there are 17 practicing on the field right now..
We're also not hearing much about is the defense - except that its being led by Senior Pat Durr. Yes, I've read some of the comments about how the D needs to improve - I'll save my shots at the coaches until we see how good, or bad the D plays.
Tht's all I've heard so far...keep those cards and letters coming...
