Purple Reign has heard rumbles that there are actually 10 commits, and that this will be a very small recruiting class, with only 12 or 13 scholarships awarded, if that. Kevin Mims told Chris Pool [see below] that he committed because NU was down to its final 2 scholarships. No we don't know who the other 2 commits might be...Anyway, Here's Chris Pool's post commit interview with The Woodland's Defensive End Kevin Mims...
Of course you hope that NU has a couple of offensive linemen on the hook, and possibly another running back, but I understand that there are already some positions that NU is no longer recruiting this year
So far the class breaks down to 3 defenders [a Defensive End, Defensive Tackle and Linebacker], and 5 offensive players [a Running Back, 2 Tight Ends and 2 Wide Receivers].
Typical Randy Walker recruiting classes are half and half, so its possible we'll see a couple of defenders join the list before February.
In any case, I suspect they are holding a scholarship for Trevor Rees' teammate from Pearland, RB Brandon Roberson, and maybe Mahtomedi's FB/TE Jerod Arlich [although Arlich is being courted by some other big time colleges].
Allan Wallace of the Insiders is also reporting that NU is recruiting lineman Steve Gatena very hard. He's all league, and at 6-7 has plenty of frame for more weight. Its apparently down to us and Stanford, but with his 1230 SAT, he's a top prospect for academics, which is his main target. He'll announce in December, altho he plans to visit NU in January.
We're going to break down the current roster of returning players in a few days, but it appears that the NU recruiting effort is now targeted on replacing next year's Seniors.
We caught up with Kevin Mims to find out if the speculation about his commitment was true. Turns out, it is. Kevin has committed to Northwestern University. And another comment from Chris about our other commit announced last Friday:
According to Kevin, the decision came down to Texas Tech and Northwestern.
"It was a tough decision and I had to sit down and do a lot of thinking," said Mims. "When it came down to it, I just felt Northwestern was the best fit for me."
Mims said that Northwestern's biomedical engineering program and location were a big pull in making his decision.
Kevin's commitment came earlier than expected so I asked Kevin why he made the decision so soon."The coaches (Northwestern) told me that they were down to two scholarships so I had to decide soon," said Mims. "To wait any longer would have been like saying no, so I committed."
Ryan Cibulka, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound wide receiver from Roselle (Ill.) Lake Park had nine catches for 179 yards in a semi-final loss to Park Ridge (Maine South).So....I'd expect a couple of commit announcements after the 5th, right about the time NU gets word on a bowl.
Cibulka is verbally committed to Northwestern. He'll play tight end for the Wildcats and his official visit will be December 5th.
Should be a good first week of December.
