Talking Wildcat Basketball -- the games so far, and playing short handed -- with the NU Coach...

Bill Carmody on the Teleconference.. His opening statement:
We're 4 and 3 right now and  we actually played our best game our last game against Bowling Green. He's [Bowling Green Coach Dan Dakich] not having a great year but its a very tough place to play...and we actually played pretty well for 40 minutes, which we hadn't done so far this year.

We more or less beat the teams we should have beaten... some of the better teams on our schedule, Colorado, Florida State, DePaul we did not play that well, they had something to do with it.

Now we're coming out of exams and got a couple of practices and we have a tough part of the schedule, to tell you the truth. The Arizona State team comes here on Wednesday and you mentioned UIC away on Saturday and after Christmas we play in the UTEP tournament and have Rutgers in the first round so our next few games will be pretty tough.

The same problems exist, we're only playing with 7 scholarship players so it makes it difficult for us and injuries are so important to us.
How has this preseason been going and what have you accomplished so far this year?
We play Colorado the first game of the year and we're up 8 with 18 minutes to go -- we played pretty well for about 20 minutes. Not great, but we still had a lead.

Florida State we were up 5 or 7 at the half, and in both of those games it wen't south in a hurry. They out scored us by 20 points in the last 15 minutes or so.

We're just trying to get the guys to play a complete game, and I think some of it has to do with the fact that we only have 7 guys, maybe they get tired, but when you look around the country, there are a lot of teams that only play -- they might have 10-11 guys on scholarship -- but they're only playing 7 or 8 guys.

I don't want to use that as an excuse, but I want our guys to think when they hit a certain mark in the 2nd half they're naturally going to be tired because they played some minutes because I've had a lot of teams that played 6 -7 guys decently so, that's one thing I'm concerned with -- trying to get across to our guys

and the other thing is I'm hoping, maybe, having said that, that we get this kid Tolic [Ivan Tolic] back. Not back but maybe able to play. They're saying two weeks he should be ready to go from his knee problems

He's practicing a little bit with us now. He'll help us out -- he's a big kid and strong and that's what he's doing out there.

So If we could get to 8 guys that would help me a lot.

We'll have more of Coach Carmody's comments about the play in the middle in the next installment....
