Two New Commits - How do They Fit?

Two New Commits - How do They Fit?

The announcement Tuesday of two Commits for 2006, Jeremy Nash and Kevin Coble, the scholarship award for Mike Jenkins and the medical loss of Ivan Tolic, put a big shuffle on Purple Reign's Northwestern Scholarship Status chart...

But its starting to look a little better down the road...
As we fill in the two commits, the two walk-ons, move the redshirt [and guess on possible redshirt] players around, the Purple Reign chart is starting to fill back up.
Center:
The loss of Ivan Tolic and graduation of Davor Duvancic leaves the Cats thin at both Center and Forward. Duvancic used to play both, although he wound up in the middle most of the time again last year.

This year fans will expect more from both Mike Thompson and Vince Scott, and the Cats need to be working on getting another big man or three.
Forward:
Of course Vedran Vukusic will be back for one more year and will be joined up front by Bernard Cote`. Tim Doyle can also be expected to fill some minutes and Guard/Forward Gary Lee is also expected back in Evanston this Fall, but he's essentially a true frosh.

For the future, Cat fans had to be happy with the news out of Scottsdale Tuesday. Kevin Coble, at 6-8 gives Northwestern a true small forward

Walk-on Guard Pat Houlihan appears to have the size to also play the small forward in the NU system, although walk-ons really have to work to break into Bill Carmody's rotation.
Guard:
The Cats appear to be reasonably set at Guard - Mohamed Hachad and Michael Jenkins - both end of year starters - are back, and Redshirt frosh Sterling Williams is expected to be playing more than a few minutes. Brandon Lee could also be back for the Big 10 season once his suspension is up.

Projecting out the incoming freshman, Craig Moore [who could redshirt] and Jeremy Nash, the Cats seem to have a full complement of Guards for the next few seasons.

Then there are the two new Walk-ons. Jason Okrzesik and Pat Houlihan could be considered to be at a higher level than past walk-on players at Northwestern. Okrzesik was highly recruited out of high school, and found himself in a bad situation down at Rice. He was a very talented HS point guard who has something to prove.

Houlihan recognized his limitations out of high school and played a couple of years of prep ball to try to improve his game. He also played with one of the top AAU teams and was highly regarded by his coaches. At 6-6 he's could provide another hybrid Guard-Forward to the NU team.

Both Walk-ons are looking at the 4 scholarships available next year and will be trying to earn a place on that scholarship roster.

Bill Carmody still has 4 scholarships to award for 2006-07.

If we had to guess, I'd figure on 3 of them for big guys.
