Cats in the Draft

3 NU Wildcats were selected in the 2006 National Football League draft this weekend. The surprise just might be who was chosen, and where...[Updated 5/1]

First off, Brett Basanez fans can cheer this former cat on in Carolina.
After the draft was completed, Baz, who holds 30 different NU records as a QB, signed with the Panthers as a free agent.
Big Barry Cofield
was picked up by the New York Giants in the 4th round.

His new Head coach, Tom Coughlin had this to say;
"So we got guys who have been in a leadership role who have played in big games and represented outstanding schools and universities and we are excited about that.

Barry Cofield was an opportunity in the fourth round that we felt, with our two picks to take two linemen, two big people there.

In Cofield, we feel he can come in and give us what we are looking for in a physical nose tackle. A first and second down guy, if you will. A run defender who can anchor in there on the center and maintain leverage – he doesn't get knocked off the ball – he'll allow those linebackers and our other front seven to work with him holding his own.

Zach Strief
who was expected to go higher [and maybe to Pittsburgh] was drafted by New Orleans in the 7th round.

News Reports have him excited to be heading to the Saints, especially since they are truly rebuilding, and picked up Reggie Bush in their first round. Zach knows all about blocking for an explosive runner.
Tim McGarigle
Was taken by the St. Louis Rams, also in the 7th round. McGarigle is College football's all time leading tackler.
These 4 were the players most expected to get a look from the NFL. Mark Philmore was also mentioned early on in the draft process, but as of Sunday night, he had not announced a free agent signing anywhere.
