Last year the Wildcats were undefeated, and seeded #1. They went on to sweep through the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament, easily dispatching lesser seeds, in some minds, on their way to a "surprise" win over a team from the conference that "should" have won the title. This year, the Cats are again ranked #1 by virtually every poll, with victories over just about every ranked team that will play them, except Duke. I guess the selection committee hopes for an NU Duke rematch on May 26th with an all ACC final. We should remember that this year was the year that Duke was supposed to make the double play in Lacrosse, winning both men's and women's titles, the women behind last year's Tewaaraton winner Katie Chrest. A wild party and Virginia messed that up in the ACC Tourney, and now the Cavs have the possibility of winning both Men's a Women's titles, if they can just keep winning. In the spring Women's Lacrosse is one sport I tend to follow pretty closely. I'm amazed at how some woman from an lower ranked Ivy League school can be the player of the week for scoring half as many goals as 3 or 4 of our women do regularly. Maybe Coach Kelly Amonte-Hiller has raised the bar for ourselves too high , the NU LAX team is so good, with so many weapons, our star players [and we have 4 or 5] have become submerged into the Wildcat "team." We're also hampered by a lack of daily news coverage - unlike the ACC and Ivy League teams - who get game coverage by the local press. Oh well, it took us 5 years to become a perennial power in Women's Tennis. 3 years down, 2 to go.
Lighting Sharon J. Drysdale Field was probably discussed once, and rejected for various reasons, but as one with a fair amount of experience in Softball Tournaments [Senior League World Series], I can assure you that having lighted fields and a professional grade ground crew [and good tarps] trumps the weather almost every time. Drysdale has the advantage of two tall buildings where light units could be placed. I've seen softball fields lit with just two poles, Drysdale Field would only require one on the First Base side. Of course there's probably some City of Evanston problem with playing NU games after dark, but who knows, playing night games just might keep the NU students out of the bars downtown.
Financial support from Parents, Alums and "total strangers" along with a good settlement from the insurance company, has the Northwestern University Crew Club back in business. They're at the club nationals this coming weekend - watch for news on how they perform. As you may remember, the crew's trailer flipped over at high speeds during Spring Break out on an interstate highway. All 9 racing shells [the official name for crew boats] were destroyed. Anyway, they're back in business and we can all hope for good things this weekend. If you'd still like to help out here's the particulars for donating money.
