When New Trier's Amy Jaeschke decided to make NU her basketball home over Duke, Maryland, and others. We had her listed as the #29 player, Blue Star Basketball ranked her 14th. In the world of women's college basketball, 6-5 is huge, and Jaeschke's role next year at center should give the cats that "big man" in the middle. But Combs wasn't done with Jaeschke's commit. Two other highly regarded players have also signed their letters of intent: Savannah Stedman, a 6-2 forward from Brandon HS in Michigan, and Shantina Boyd, a 6-2 center from Bolingbrook HS. Stedman is one of those women who plays everything, but she's regarded as a "long lanky playmaker" by Coach Combs. Boyd has played on a state championship team, and is regarded by Combs as "the rebounder, the stopper and the finisher." You can joke about a two tower offense with Jaeschke and Boyd, but add these three to transfers Jennifer Eckhart [5-9 Guard], Lakeisha Jones [6-1 Forward] and Ellen Jaeschke [6-2 Center] and you have the makings of a pretty good program. And the present team isn't all that shabby - even with the loss of Ifeoma Okonkwo - NU's leading scorer from last year. A.J. Glasauer is well respected around the conference. Former Walk-on [from Field Hockey] Holly Palin is the other senior on the squad. Glasauer is providing the leadership. Combs is very open about needing one player to step up and become the "go to" player. Her desire is that A.J. do that as a senior leader, but she also expects several of the present team to step up and challenge for the position. Here's an interesting thought from Beth Combs I think our freshmen have raised the bar. The addition of new staff members and bringing in freshmen always leads to new ideas, new focuses, and enthusiasm, and we need to take advantage of that. -- NUSports.com
