I did raise the issue of Black Coaches last week after the election, but only because it makes little sense that there are few Black faces as the head man in Division I Football. We've discussed this over the past few days on the NU Sports List - a private discussion board - and the basic conclusion is that the Black players who succeed in the NFL probably don't need the money or the hassle of becoming a Division I coach. Add the attraction of a potential broadcasting carrer after playing days are over, and you wonder why anyone who is well spoken with four or five years in the NFL would want to live and die by the performance of a bunch of 18-21 year old college students. But here comes Andre Ware on ESPN's NU-dOSU broadcast commenting on the issue during the 3rd quarter, without really saying anything. Ware is a guy who probably could run a top Div I program, but he's got a much better job commenting on other Div I programs. His position is even better than mine, since he's probably better rewarded for his efforts but I digress - the point is that NU and dOSU were still playing football and they had nothing to say about what transpired on the field for almost 10 minutes- So I had finally recovered from that, and dOSU pulls off a spectacular play to go ahead with what proved to be an unsurmoundable lead, and then dOSU goes and runs a fake punt, followed by a TD, then brings in the backup QB who throws another TD, and then after a turnover, dOSU hands off for a 3rd TD. Look at the score and dOSU appears to have played a fabulous game. Those who watched saw a fairly close game that was still within 2 scores as we headed into the 4th quarter. I help with our local HS teams - we threw a kid off the team this year for running a fake punt when we were up by 14 with less than a minute to play. The other team hadn't crossed the 50 in the half and our coaches knew that there was no way the other guys could make up the difference. You see, at some point, a good coach tells his players that we'll continue to play hard, but we won't run up the score. I know its the job of the defense to stop the other team, but today, dOSU's senior QB showed just how much class he has - the same kind of class that led to losses by the Bucks in the last 2 National Championship games. Oh, well, at least he'll probably graduate - something better than most dOSU players do lately. I wonder if he'll ever coach a team? Hey, Hey, that's OK, You'll all work for us some day!
