The Northwestern Athletic Department released some numbers on NU student athletes' academic performance. Predictably, the marks are pretty good. Because recruits seem to invariably discuss the school's academic reputation as a reason for attending NU, Purple Reign wanted to share this with you...

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern student-athletes have continued to excel in the classroom. Here are some highlights from the 2009 spring academic quarter:

• 17 out of 19 teams achieved team GPA's of 3.00 matching NU's all-time high

• ALL teams achieved team GPA's of 2.90 and higher for the second time ever

• NU set an all-time high with an overall individual average GPA of 3.21 (previous high had been 3.14)

• 13 out of 19 teams had cumulative GPA's of 3.00 and higher

• 299 out of 426 student-athletes (70%) achieved GPA's of 3.00 and higher

• 147 of those student-athletes achieved GPA's of 3.50 and higher

• 32 of those student-athletes achieved perfect 4.00 GPA's

"Once again, our student-athletes have shown an outstanding commitment to academic excellence," Director of Athletics and Recreation Jim Phillips said. "The number one goal of our student-athletes is to earn a Northwestern degree. Northwestern is proud to remain a leader among our peers in graduating our student-athletes. The commitment to the classroom by both our in-season and out-of-season teams is outstanding."
