It’s not like Miles Shuler has ever been averse to homework. After all, you don’t compile a 3.8 GPA by avoiding the library, and you don’t receive scholarship offers from schools like Northwestern, Stanford, Duke and Vanderbilt without knowing your way around a text book. But as the school year ends and summer begins, Shuler is set to embark on a different kind of research project.

It’s not like Miles Shuler has ever been averse to homework. After all, you don’t compile a 3.8 GPA by avoiding the library, and you don’t receive scholarship offers from schools like Northwestern, Stanford, Duke and Vanderbilt without knowing your way around a text book.

So, no – homework has never been the bane of Shuler’s existence. But as the school year ends and summer begins, Shuler is set to embark on a different sort of research project.

The four-star athlete from Long Branch, N.J., has long held scholarship offers from Rutgers, Northwestern and Pitt. There are, however, a bevy of schools that have recently entered the Shuler Sweepstakes. And before Shuler makes a decision, he is going to do some research.

“All theses news schools coming in, I gotta do my homework on them,” Shuler, who runs a sub-4.4 40, told Purple Reign on Wednesday night. “Notre Dame, Oklahoma – I gotta do my homework on them and mix that in with the Northwesterns and Pitts and Rutgerses, see what they have to offer. I don’t have a top (choice) right now. Nothing’s changed. I’m still going keep doing my homework.”

That’s a sound strategy, because Shuler has plenty to study. In the last month, the 5-10, 180-pounder has received offers from Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Nebraska, Virginia and more. A list that stood at about 10 schools in early March has now swelled to about two dozen. And Shuler admits that he still has a lot to learn.

“They’re new,” Shuler said of the recent schools to offer. “We’re going to find out. They’re new right now, so we’ll see…. I gotta start narrowing it down soon, knock off the schools that aren’t doing a good job recruiting me or schools that I’m not feeling.”

One school that Shuler is feeling is Northwestern, which offered Shuler way back before Thanksgiving. The Cats’ early offer has endeared them to Shuler.

“That does a lot,” Shuler said. “They were the second school to offer me. They’re there for me. They’re doing a great job recruiting me. They’re just looking at it like no other schools have offered me, like they’re the only one. I love Coach Fitz. He does a great job.

“They’re definitely on my list,” Shuler added. “They’re one of my tops.”

Shuler has been high on Northwestern for months, and vice-versa. In a March chat with Purple Reign, he said that Northwestern was among the schools recruiting him the hardest, and that he appreciated the attention. Those sentiment haven’t changed.

“I think that, you know, them being constantly on me – they just don’t quit,” Shuler said. “I’m not saying they’re the underdog, but they’re the type of school that’s talking to me all the time. I like that; I find that attractive. I like Coach Fitz, we stay in contact, he’s crazy about me. Coach (Kevin) Johns, Coach (Bob) Heffner – I love that coaching staff. I like their schemes, what they’re trying to do with the ball.”

Shuler, who plays quarterback in high school but projects to receiver at NU, said that he will “definitely” be coming to Northwestern in June. All told, three schools – along with Notre Dame and Rutgers – are already inked into his summer itinerary.

While Shuler’s travel schedule is taking shape, he says that there is almost no chance that he will be making a commitment before the summer ends. He has too many places to see, too much studying to do. Plus, he likes being recruited, even if there’s homework involved.

“It’s not annoying at all,” Shuler said. “I’m tying to make this recruiting process as fun as possible. I know that I’m only going to have one time to be recruited. This is my last time because it only comes once. I’m taking it easy and I’m enjoying every minute.”
