While Center Ivan Tolic recovers from tendonitis, the weight of playing in the middle falls on two of his countrymen -- Soph Center/Fwd Davor Duvancic and Soph Forward Vedran Vukusic -- and a Freshman Center, Vince Scott.
Coach Carmody touched on how they're playing and what they need to do to improve...
Bill Carmody on the Teleconference..
More on having Ivan Tolic available, and what it means for coaching the rest of the players...
I'm not looking for him as being a savior or anything,
but just another body, where I could rest guys or sometimes your guys
aren't playing so well, and you can take 'em out and you can take them
out and point things out to them and help them out that way.
Plus, he [Tolic] knows what he's doing. I don't think he's going to be
a big scorer -- I hope he gets key rebounds but -- I just think he
knows what he's doing out there -- he's got a good sense and that kind
of thing and that kind of thing is always helpful.
What about the development of your interior players...
You have Davor Duvancic, about 6-8. He came on
a little bit towards the end of last year but didn't really play that
many minutes, now this year he's playing over 30 minutes a game. He
played well in our last game.
We played Florida State he took 2 shots and I just told him,
"Hey, you like looking at the box score and seeing that stuff, like
2-2-4, or something like that? C'mon kid, you gotta gets some shots in."
And I was very frank with him so he came out against Bowling Green
and the first half he took 3 - 3's and he knocked 'em all down. He's a
capable kid, perhaps its my fault, I have to define his role a little
bit better, you know, some guys need that.
So, he has come along and he is capable .
And you know Vedran Vukusic, played well, he had 20 against Bowling Green. You know he's coming off sitting out a year and he has been rusty, but he's still playing pretty well.
Arizona State - they've got a big guy in the middle, a very good player. UIC - is a tough, tough team. They hit the boards, Rutgers -
they've got some big kids, then you're going into your Big 10 season so
I don't know how they're going to hold up, we need another body or two
in there right now.
And Vince Scott [is] a 6-10 freshman and he's not quite ready yet. We're going to have to play him but it'll take him a while.
If Tolic was not hurt, Vince could come along a little
more slowly, which probably be helpful to him, but this is the way it
is so he's going to have to come along faster.
And that's it from the teleconference.
