Purdue assistant coach Bill Legg is laying the groundwork for Boilermaker recruiting in Ohio. Legg already received a verbal commitment from Trotwood’s Roy Roundtree and now Cincinnati’s Rick Schmeig said Legg is a big reason why he gave Purdue his verbal commitment.

“I feel very comfortable with Coach Legg and that’s one of the main reasons why I committed to Purdue.” Rick Schmeig told the Boiler Sports Report.

“I received my offer from Purdue not too long ago but Coach Legg has always kept in contact with me and he was always letting me know where I stood. Last week I was in West Lafayette and I took a six hour tour of the campus.

“After I toured the campus, I was in the lobby of the football office with my parents, Coach (Joe) Tiller and Coach Legg. Before the conversation was finished, I shook hands with Coach Tiller and committed.”

Schmeig, a 6-foot-5, 300-pounder, from Oak Hills high, is Purdue’s second known verbal commitment on the offensive line. West Virginia’s Andrew Brewer is also a Purdue pledge.

Schmeig was moved up to the varsity as a sophomore and became a full-time starter after the starter at his position was kicked off the team. As a junior, Schmeig started all but one game at tackle. He started one game at center.

“Coach Tiller told me that I’m going to be a guard.” Schmeig said. “That’s fine with me. I feel that I’m strong enough to take on defensive tackles and athletic enough to pull and trap.”

Schmeig grew up a fan of the home-state Buckeyes but Tiller need not worry if Jim Tressel comes in late with a scholarship offer.

“A commitment is a commitment,” said Schmeig. “I view it as getting engaged. I made a commitment to Purdue and they made a commitment to me. I’m solid.”

Schmeig did miss two games as a junior due to an illness which probably cost him post-season honors. Rick is solid in the classroom carrying a 3.0 GPA. He scored a 1320 on his SAT.
